Therapy FAQs in Carlsbad, California

Probably a lot more human than you're expecting.

You'll hear me laugh. You might see me tear up. You'll definitely hear me celebrate the wins that you may be tempted to brush off. And yes...there's a decent chance you'll hear me cuss. (Professionally, of course.)

I'll challenge you when I think fear is driving the bus. I'll sit quietly when silence has something to say. I'll ask questions that make you pause, and every now and then I'll say something that follows you home long after the session ends.

I won't pretend to have all the answers, and I won't hide behind therapist jargon. I show up as a real person because I believe healing happens in real relationships.

My hope is that you'll leave each session feeling a little more understood, a little more grounded, and a little more connected to yourself than when you walked in.

Perfect.

You don't need a perfectly organized story or a list of talking points. You don't need to know exactly what happened or have the "right" words.

My job isn't to expect a polished version of your life. It's to help make sense of the messy parts, together.

Almost everyone asks this without asking it.

People come into therapy worried that if they tell me the whole story, I'll think they're weak, dramatic, selfish, broken...or just too much.

I won't.

I've learned that when we understand why people do what they do, judgment usually gives way to compassion. My office is one of the few places where you don't have to earn acceptance before you tell the truth.

No, I won't stare at you in silence while taking mysterious notes.

Our first session is simply a conversation. I'll ask questions about what's bringing you in, what you've already tried, what's hurting, and what you hope life could look like if things felt different.

There's no pressure to tell me your entire life story in fifty minutes.

We'll get there together.

Usually before you realize it.

One day you'll respond differently to something that used to overwhelm you.

You'll set a boundary without apologizing.

Sleep a little better.

Feel less responsible for everyone else's emotions.

The goal isn't to never struggle again.

It's to struggle differently.

No.

Being heard is healing.

But insight without action rarely changes a life.

We'll notice patterns, challenge beliefs that no longer serve you, process what's been stuck, and help your nervous system learn something new.

Talking is part of therapy, but it's certainly not the whole thing.

The most honest answer?

It depends.

Some people come in with one specific goal.

Others are untangling decades of experiences.

I don't believe in keeping people in therapy forever, and I don't believe in rushing meaningful work.

We'll check in regularly to make sure therapy continues to serve you.

You don't have to earn therapy.

Trauma isn't a competition.

If your experiences are still shaping how you think, relate, love, trust, or move through the world today, they're worth paying attention to.

Because I want our work together to be guided by your goals, not an insurance company's requirements.

Private-pay also allows for greater privacy, flexibility, and treatment that's based on what you need rather than what someone else will reimburse. If you have out-of-network benefits, I'm happy to provide a superbill that you can submit for possible reimbursement.

There are a lot of incredible therapists out there, and I'm not the right fit for everyone.

My approach is warm, direct, and deeply relational. I'll absolutely sit with you in the hard moments, but I also won't let you stay stuck in the same story forever. I'll ask thoughtful questions, notice patterns you may not see, and challenge the beliefs that no longer serve you.

I also integrate approaches like EMDR, Brainspotting, and Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed work when they're appropriate, because healing isn't just about understanding your story. It's about helping your mind, body, and nervous system finally experience something different.

My hope is that therapy with me feels less like being analyzed and more like having a trusted guide walk beside you as you reconnect with the person you were always meant to be.

The easiest place to begin is by scheduling a complimentary 15-minute consultation.

We'll talk about what's bringing you in, answer any questions you have, and get a feel for whether we're a good fit. If it feels right, we'll schedule your first session. If not, I'm happy to help point you toward someone who may be a better fit.

Therapy is an investment, and I want you to feel confident in your decision.

The easiest way to reach me is by completing the consultation request form on my website or emailing me directly at chelsea@wildlightcounseling.co.

Because I'm often in session, I don't answer calls during the day, but I'll get back to you as soon as I can, typically within one to two business days.

If you're experiencing a mental health emergency or need immediate support, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. This practice isn't equipped to provide crisis services.

Wildlight Counseling is a private-pay practice.

Current fees are listed on my Investment page. Payment is due at the time of service, and I accept all major credit cards as well as HSA and FSA cards.

If you have out-of-network benefits, I'm happy to provide a superbill that you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.

You don't have to figure everything out before reaching out.

If there's something you're wondering that isn't answered here, ask. Seriously.

I'd much rather have a conversation than have you spend another week wondering whether therapy is the right next step.

Let's start there.
